The week in brief
- Emirates will have more cargo capacity in Boston beginning Aug. 1, when it switches from its Boeing 777-200LR now operating the route to a larger Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
- Representatives from airlines and fuel suppliers voted Shell Aviation as the World’s Best International Jet Fuel Marketer & Supplier in the 2013/2014 Armbrust Awards. The annual Armbrust Awards are based on an international industry survey conducted by consulting company Armbrust Aviation Group.
- CHEP Aerospace Solutions, a provider of outsourced ULD services, signed a five-year agreement with Hawaiian Airlines for the supply and management of ULDs.
- Air India started a direct flight between India and Italy. The airline will operate flights from Delhi to Rome and Milan. The flight will be operated on a triangular route with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Air India the only Indian carrier with direct flights to and from Italy.
- Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) signed a partnership agreement with Transglobal Cargo Centre in Kenya to take over the full management, operation and business development of Transglobal’s fresh produce and cargo terminal at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Transglobal Cargo Centre now operates under the Africa Flight Services brand, the WFS division responsible for the development of handling activities across Africa.
- Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) won the Enterprise Award at the CILT Award 2013. The CILT Award is a biennial award organized by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILT). The award recognizes companies that have made significant contribution to the transport and logistics fields.
- Miami International Airport (MIA) welcomed the launch of scheduled service by Air Europa and Boliviana de Aviación (BoA). Air Europa offers three weekly nonstop flights to Madrid using Airbus A330-200 aircraft. BoA, Bolivia’s flag carrier, is offering service between Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and MIA using Boeing 737-300 aircraft.
- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration announced that Nevada’s unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) test site is ready to conduct research vital to integrating UAS into the nation’s airspace. Nevada is the third of six congressionally mandated test sites to become operational.
- United Cargo launched new nonstop service between its San Francisco hub and Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport in Chengdu, China. Chengdu is a high-tech manufacturing center.
- Japan Airlines applied to the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to revise its international cargo fuel surcharge for flights departing from Japan beginning July 1. Since April 1, 2009, JAL started adjusting its cargo fuel surcharge levels on a monthly basis by using the one-month average fuel price of Singapore kerosene of the month before last.
- Emirates Group Security has become the first airline security organization in the region to be awarded the Transported Asset Protection Association’s (TAPA) Air Cargo Security Standard (TACSS) certifications for its cargo facilities. TACSS is a new TAPA certification program that consolidates security services for air cargo. The TACSS process assesses threats such as theft and use of cargo for terrorist purposes.
- Aeronautical Engineers, Inc. (AEI) delivered a B737-300SF nine-pallet freighter to Aloha Air Cargo of Hawaii. The aircraft is a Boeing 737-300 and was built in 1995. This is AEI’s 9th of the anticipated 30 or more freighters to be delivered in 2014.
- Qatar Airways began service to Miami International Airport, its sixth U.S. gateway.
- Airbus confirmed that Emirates decided to cancel its order of 70 A350 XWB aircraft. The decision follows on-going discussions with the airline in light of their fleet requirement review.
