The week in brief
- Etihad Airways launched daily nonstop service between Los Angeles International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport. Los Angeles is Etihad’s fourth U.S. destination.
- In the next step to co-locate operations across the combined network, US Airways Cargo joined American Airlines Cargo’s operations at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. While the two carriers continue to operate independently, the co-located facility allows American and US Airways customers to tender and recover air waybill shipments in one location.
- Almost 100 Specialist Freight Networks (SFN) delegates traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to show their support for the first SFN meeting. SFN links together more than 220 independent freight forwarders in 121 countries.
- Volga-Dnepr Airlines operated its first flight for Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), moving the SaudiSat-4 satellite made in Saudi Arabia to its launch site in Orsk, Russia with a IL-76TD-90VD freighter. KACST is responsible for the promotion of science and technology in Saudi Arabia.
- United Cargo will expand its service for temperature-sensitive shipments by adding Lima, Peru, and Taipei, Taiwan, to its worldwide TempControl network. This will increase the number of locations certified to provide United Cargo TempControl service to 47.
- Saudia Cargo will recommence freighter service from Houston to Saudi Arabia as of June 15. The service will be operated with B747-400 freighter once a week from Houston direct to Dammam and Riyadh via Amsterdam. Saudia Cargo plans to add a second weekly flight as of September.
- Emirates will launch a sixth daily service to Karachi, Pakistan, on Aug. 1.
- Delta Air Lines will grow its A320 family with an order for 15 A321ceo (current engine option) aircraft to offset jet retirements.
- Swissport International, a provider of ground and cargo handling services, and Transaero Airlines, a Russian carrier, announced the signing of a five-year global framework agreement for worldwide ground handling services.
- U.S. logistics provider Expeditors won Lufthansa Cargo’s Planet Award of Excellence. The airline presented the award to Expeditors in recognition of the company’s contribution to Lufthansa during 2013.
- Etihad Airways announced a major expansion of its codeshare agreement with Jet Airways, offering more connections throughout India, and linking India with more destinations worldwide. The two airlines have obtained regulatory approval to codeshare on 43 additional routes, bringing the total number to 71.
- Jet Airways and ULD company Jettainer signed a five-year contract for the outsourcing of ULD cargo services.
- Air Astana was inducted as a full member of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines.
- The U.S Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a US$63,000 civil penalty against Hixwood Metal, Inc. of Stanley, Wis., for allegedly violating hazardous materials regulations. The FAA alleges that on Aug. 28, 2013, Hixwood Metal offered a five-gallon container of Towerdraw lightweight industrial lubricant to UPS for shipment by air to West Union, Iowa. Employees at the UPS sorting facility in Altoona, Wis., discovered the package was leaking. The lubricant is a hazardous material. In a separate case, the FAA is proposing a US$76,000 civil penalty against Atlantic Technical Systems, Inc., for allegedly violating hazardous materials regulations. The FAA alleges that on Nov. 11, 2013, Atlantic Technical Systems offered three, four-liter containers of isopropyl alcohol to FedEx Corp. for shipment by air to Woodstock, Ill. Employees at FedEx’s sorting facility in Cary, Ill., noticed the shipment was leaking. The FAA alleges that Hixwood Metal and Atlantic Technical Systems did not declare the hazardous materials.
- Frankfurt is the next destination slated for Emirates’ flagship A380 aircraft. The daily A380 service will start on Sept. 1.
