From a six-month perspective, Hactl sustained year-over-year growth for the first time since February 2011. The cargo-handler welcomed 1,325,502 tonnes of freight during the first half of 2012, which consisted of 691,684 tonnes of exports, 317,746 tonnes of imports and 316,072 tonnes of transshipments.
Imports, however, impaired Hactl’s performance during the first half of 2012. Plunging 7.8 percent, year-over-year, this decline was largely attributable to a 13.2 percent, year-over-year, drop in imports from Europe. Still, a respective 27 percent and 12.1 percent, year-over-year, surge in imports from the Middle East and Southeast Asia helped Hactl offset much of this decline. June was a particularly strong month for Hactl, with the cargo-handler welcoming 58,322 tonnes — its highest monthly volume since the end of 2010.
Transshipments continued to show growth as well, with Hactl’s June volume — 55,655 tonnes — nearly matching the record-breaking loads it handled in December 2011 and March 2012.
Hactl also saw a rise in export volumes in June, a trend that applied to the previous two months, as well. Propelling this growth was double-digit increases in exports to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, with volumes to these regions increasing 13.4 percent and 10.4 percent, year-over-year, respectively, in the first half of 2012.
Lilian Chan, executive director of Hactl, called these numbers promising. “The recovery trend in our total figures continues, and we seem likely to return to modest annual growth once again, as 2012 progresses,” she said in a statement.
