On behalf of the American Red Cross, the UPS foundation delivered about 45 tonnes of relief supplies to help more than 50,000 residents of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, located northeast of Guam in the Northern Pacific. The islands were battered by both Typhoon Soudelor on Aug. 2 and Tropical Storm Goni on Aug. 15. Typhoon Soudelor later made landfall in northeast Taiwan on Aug. 8.
The American Red Cross said that Typhoon Soudelor is the most destructive storm to strike the Northern Mariana Islands in the last 30 years and has affected thousands of residents in the region.
Last year, the UPS Foundation’s Humanitarian Relief and Resilience program moved 263 relief shipments across 43 countries.
