May saw a 7.5 percent increase in air cargo tonnage year over year, according to consultants WorldACD. Meanwhile, there was a yield drop of 0.2 percent.
From April to May, yields fell by 1.9 percent, a not unusual seasonal phenomenon.
In outgoing volumes, Asia Pacific stood out with growth over 10 percent year over year, followed by Central and South America (8.7 percent) and Africa (8.5 percent).
A yield increase could only be registered for the origin Europe (5 percent), but this was due to rate-of-exchange effects, WorldACD said. Measured in euros, yields ex Europe were flat as well. In incoming cargo, Africa and the Middle East did well with year-over-year yields (in USD) growing by 4.9 percent.
The already positive year-to-date trend was further reinforced, leading to a 5 percent revenue growth (in USD) for January-May compared to the same period in 2013. Yield differences between the individual months were less pronounced than last year.
Perishables, pharmaceuticals and temperature-controlled goods continued to grow more than other cargo.
