Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was in the middle of the pre-Valentine’s Day rush as growers in Africa scrambled to get their roses into shops in time for the holiday.
The airport usually has 26 freighter flights a week, but that wasn’t enough with the extra flower traffic: 800 tonnes of additional inbound freighter capacity were added, making for an increase of 30 percent.
Bart Pouwels , Schiphol’s cargo business development director, said the airport handled 30 million extra imported rose stems in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.
