Cargo carrier RAF-Avia, based in Riga, Latvia, operated the inaugural service using one of the two 5.5 tonne capacity AN-26 freighters that it now has stationed at the German airport. RAF-Avia runs commercial charters as well as providing feeder services for TNT and DHL.
Danish company Airport Development bought Cochstedt, a former East German military base located between Leipzig and Berlin, in 2010. The airport boasts good road connections to nearby commercial centers, including Wolfsburg, 40 minutes away, where Volkswagen has its global headquarters.
Cochstedt, now classified as an EU Regulated Agent and Known Consignor, will leverage its unrestricted 24-hour license by developing as a logistics hub. On-airport freight facilities of 70,000 and 10,000 square feet are to be built in 2013.
A spokesman told us land was available adjacent to the airport for development by the logistics industry, and envisioned the development of temperature-controlled facilities.
“We have a 3,100-meter runway and we’re well located to bring fresh produce in from Egypt and the Middle East. It’s a good sector length,” he said. “Major multinational forwarders establishing themselves would be close to the DCs of large German supermarkets, with good access into Poland.”
