Singapore’s Changi Airport Group (CAG) has awarded the first of many contracts to begin the project that is expected to result in a third runway for the airport. The US$1.12 billion contract was granted to a joint venture formed by Samsung C&T Corp. and Koh Brothers.
The scope of the contract will be to extend an existing third runway, which is now used for joint civil-military use, to handle larger aircraft. The plan also involves the development of supporting taxiways to connect the expanded runway to the rest of Changi Airport.
In addition to pavement work the JV will provide security fencing and perimeter road works; mechanical and electrical systems; and other support services. The project will also construct canals and drainage systems that will keep the runway and taxiways free of surface water and prevent flooding.
CAG currently operates two runways that service three terminals, as well as the upcoming Terminal Four. To safeguard adequate runway capacity for additional growth beyond 2020 and to cater to the future Terminal Five, CAG said it is necessary to complete this third runway project by the early 2020s.
