AF-KLM’s freight revenue slid 1.9 percent, year-over-year, to €758 million in the third quarter of 2012, while the carrier’s cargo operating result stood at to -€67 million. In contrast, AF-KLM Cargo ended the third quarter of 2011 at -€37 million for its operating result. The challenging cargo environment also affected the carrier’s capacity utilization in the third quarter of this year, with AF-KLM’s freight load factor falling 1.9-percent, year-over-year, to 61.8 percent.
These figures are in line with AF-KLM’s statistics from a nine-month standpoint. The carrier’s cargo load factor declined from 66 percent to 63.5 percent, year-over-year, in the first nine months of 2012, while capacity fell 2.9 percent from January-to-September 2011.
Also sliding in the first nine months of 2012 was AF-KLM’s total freight traffic. Volumes tumbled 6.5 percent, year-over-year, during the first nine months of 2012, which caused the carrier’s cargo revenue to plunge 3.2 percent, year-over-year.
In the press release, AF-KLM said that the company’s Transform 2015 plan, which was announced this spring, is beginning to positively impact costs. As part of the carrier’s bid to return to profitability, Air France Cargo announced that it will be curbing its freighter capacity by 20 percent.
