It’s a well-known fact that FedEx calls Memphis home, but it is not alone when it comes to express logistics. German rival DHL Express is expanding to a new service center in Memphis that will serve the tri-state area of Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. DHL expects shipment growth from local businesses trading internationally as well as an increase in e-commerce, so it made the US$2.5 million investment in the center.
Located closer to Memphis International Airport, the DHL facility will operate as the local center for pick-up, delivery and sorting operations of international shipments. It can also take advantage of process efficiencies from a larger, 30,000-square-foot building footprint.
“This new facility will not only support customer shipment growth, but will also allow for earlier delivery times and later drop-off times for international importers and exporters,” said John Fox, area general manager, southeast U.S., for DHL Express.
The facility will handle a variety of shipments, including international small parcels as well as palletized and container freight. It also features a large customer counter, an expanded parking lot, and several dozen pick-up and delivery vehicles fueled by propane gas.
