- Boeing completed the first 787-9 Dreamliner (pictured above). The second member of the super-efficient 787 family will fly later this summer. It is 6 meters (20 feet) longer than the 787-8. With the second and third airplanes in final assembly, first delivery to launch customer Air New Zealand is set for mid-2014. Boeing also finalized an order with Xiamen Airlines in China for six 787-8s.
- LAN Cargo launched a new smartphone app that will allow the airline’s customers to monitor the status of their shipments with their mobile phone, 24 hours a day, from any location. To download the app, called LAN Cargo mobile, the user needs to go to Apple’s App Store, download the app onto a smartphone and enter the AWB number.
- Representatives from Leipzig/Halle Airport and the Saxon State government in Germany are participating in the largest aerospace exhibition in Russia. They are travelling to the international MAKS exhibition in Zhukovsky near Moscow until Sept. 1.
- IAG Cargo is opening five new stations in its Constant Climate network, a service for time- and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products. The stations are all in Latin America so the carrier can support the region’s burgeoning pharma industry, which grew by nearly 9 percent in 2012. The additional LATAM stations opened at El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Colombia; Juan Santamaría International Airport in Costa Rica; Tocumen International Airport in Panama; Simon Bolivar International in Venezuela; and La Aurora Airport in Guatemala. In total, IAG Cargo now has 12 Constant Climate airports across Latin America and 87 worldwide.
- Airbus and VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation, the largest worldwide titanium producer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of an end-to-end collaboration, which covers development, processing and recycling of titanium material used for all Airbus aircraft programs. VSMPO-AVISMA and Airbus will jointly explore the development of new alloys and processes.
- Melbourne Airport provided an overview of the airport’s performance over the past year and future plans to an audience of almost 700 people at the Melbourne Town Hall. Melbourne Airport leads in Australia’s airfreight exports with a 16-percent increase in freight exports during 2013. There was more than US$100 million of development undertaken in Melbourne Airport’s business park during the year, including new warehousing and logistics facilities for companies such as Borders Express, Fellowes, Panalpina and ABR.
- Airbus and RT-Biotekhprom, a biotech company that’s part of the Rostec Group, signed a cooperation agreement to launch a large-scale analysis of Russian feedstock, and to evaluate how to accelerate the development and commercialization of sustainable fuels for aviation. The goal of the study is to select a number of local sources of sustainable raw materials suitable for the production of aviation fuel. By the end of 2014, the aim is to complete a full sustainability analysis.
- mercator, a provider of aviation IT services and part of the Emirates Group, and United Airlines joined forces to migrate the airline’s cargo logistics and revenue accounting systems to mercator’s SkyChain and RAPID Cargo services. It has created one of the largest cargo IT services in the airline industry. The migration has helped United Airlines move away from around 20 legacy systems, saving millions in operational costs.
- Volga-Dnepr Group launched its 3rd international photographic competition for professional and amateur aviation photographers taking pictures of its An-124-100, IL-76TD-90VD and Boeing 747 fleet. Photo entries can be uploaded to http://photo.volga-dnepr.com, and site visitors can help choose the winners by voting for their favorite photos. The closing date for entries and votes is Oct. 15.

AMI is offering airport-to-airport, airport-to-door and door-to-door services with the option of direct or consolidation pricing. Since it opened in Miami, AMI has handled eight urgent shipments to Africa, five tonnes of food supplements to Brazil and an aircraft engine to Dublin.
