Facing increased competition from low-cost carriers, All Nippon Airways (ANA) is considering adding a new cargo hub somewhere in Southeast Asia and increasing international destinations, said Shinya Katanozaka, the incoming president of ANA’s parent company, ANA Holdings.
Speaking with the Japan Times, Katanozaka said a new Southeast Asia hub will be crucial for the growth of ANA’s cargo business as demand grows for Japanese products in the region. Katanozaka also said he wants ANA to focus on more international destinations because of the ongoing decline in the Japanese population, which has led to weaker demand for domestic traffic.
ANA currently maintains a logistics hub at Okinawa Naha Airport, which provides convenient access to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Osaka, Qingdao, Incheon, Shanghai Pudong, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo. It has also entered into a partnership with Lufthansa Cargo on flights between Europe and Japan.
Additionally, with Japan serving as host to the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Olympics, these global events should mean big business for ANA’s cargo ambitions.
