Moscow Cargo, the air cargo operator at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), launched commercial operations at the facility’s new 43,200-square-meter cargo complex, the largest such operation in Russia.
The new terminal handles about 250 tonnes of cargo per day and has an annual capacity of 380,000 tonnes per year. All cargo operations for domestic flights at the airport have moved to the terminal, which boasts automation levels of 60 percent.
The airport’s chairman of the board, Alexander Ponomarenko, said the airport has plans for ambitious growth over the next seven years, by which time it expects to handle more than 700,000 tonnes of airfreight per year. To accomplish that goal, engineering and construction for a second cargo terminal with capacity equal to the new one is scheduled to begin in 2018.
In the upcoming weeks, cargo operations for international flights will be gradually moved to the new complex.
