Cainiao opens 6-warehouse logistics park in Jakarta

Cainiao Group , the logistics arm of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. , launched its first warehouse hub serving Jakarta, Indonesia, last week as part of its regional Cainiao Hubs, or cHubs, expansion plan. (Photo/Cainiao)[/caption] Situated in Deltamas Cikarang’s Greenland International Industrial Center east of Jakarta, the site is 320,000 square meters and encompasses six warehouses spanning 170,000 square meters. The Cainiao Cikarang Logistics Park is located near factories to support the local manufacturing industry through fulfilment and sorting for local deliveries; import and export for B2B and B2C businesses; smart supply chain management; and logistics technology like Internet of Things , automation and warehouse management systems. “We will work with tenants/businesses to incorporate suitable smart logistics technologies in the warehouse where needed,” Cainiao Vice President Eric Xu told Air Cargo Next . “Here, we will have the opportunity to tap into the broader Cainiao Group’s technology capabilities to ensure a seamless experience for tenants.” To increase sustainability , all six warehouses feature skylights, allowing normal operations during the day without the need for artificial lighting and reducing energy consumption for tenants. The project also factored in local climate and uses a natural ventilation system in the warehouse; ventilation louvers are installed on the roof to use air convection to dissipate indoor heat, ensuring a comfortable environment while saving energy. Indonesia economy grows Prior to its official launch in July, the project achieved a 75% occupancy rate. Tenants include PT Senopati Fujitrans Logistic Services , PT SGMW Indonesia , CJ Logistics , Klog , Haier and Lazada . “Jakarta is a key economic city in Indonesia,” Xu said. “The aim is to support local businesses and boost supply chain workflows and capabilities within the region. “According to the World Bank , economic growth in Indonesia is projected to slow down to 4.9% in 2023 compared to 5.3% in 2022,” he continued. “This is attributed to the global economic slowdown, after the rapid rise in the post-pandemic trade and commerce demand last year. [The country’s] projected growth, regardless of the slowdown, offers substantial opportunities for local businesses that require warehousing space, and for us to share our logistics technology know-how.” There are more than 62 million small- and medium-sized enterprises in Indonesia, according to the World Economic Forum , and e-commerce revenue in the country is expected to reach $44.8 billion in 2023 and grow at 10.44% annually to reach $66.7 billion in 2027. Increased presence in Southeast Asia The new site is the third warehouse hub in a regional network of cHubs in Southeast Asia. The two other warehouses are in Vietnam, in the Long An and Dong Nai provinces. The Long An warehouse began operations in the second quarter of 2022 and the Dong Nai warehouse site is under construction, according to Xu. “The PAT Logistics Park in Long An spans 110,000 square meters and provides services such as local distribution, supply chain management and export logistics,” Xu said. The site “provides direct access to the country’s key business hubs: the Mekong Delta, which accounts for 20% of the global rice trade, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s economic center.” The Dong Nai Logistics Park project spans about 168,000 square meters and offers 90,000 square meters of leasable warehouse space, Xu said. “It is located in one of the largest and well-established industrial parks, 30 kilometers away from Ho Chi Minh City, in close proximity to two operational major seaports, Cat Lai and Cai Mep-Thi Vai,” Xu said. “It also boasts connectivity to ongoing infrastructural projects such as the Long Thanh-Dau Giay and Ben Luc-Long Thanh expressways that connect Dong Nai and the Mekong Delta region, as well as the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport .” Join Air Cargo Next for the second annual Air Cargo Tech Summit on Monday, Sept. 18, and Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Brussels Marriott Hotel Grand Place in Belgium.
