Emirates SkyCargo more than doubled the volume of mangoes it carried in May compared to the same period last year, transporting 1,130 tonnes of the Indian export out of its hub in Mumbai to destinations in the Middle East, the U.K., the U.S., Canada and Europe on its freighters and in its passenger planes’ belly holds.
Eighty percent of the 2,650 tonnes of mangoes the airline carried since April were sourced from the Maharashtra region of India – one of the largest exporters of the fruit in the country – which produces about 30,000 tonnes of mangos during the height of the season each year, spanning from April to June.
The carrier is embracing the role of an international transporter of perishables, last week announcing the launch of a new route from Santiago, which will provide capacity for Chile’s food exports – such as salmon – to China, Russia and the Middle East.
