Amazon Air adds DFW area to hub network

Amazon Air has introduced another piece to the puzzle that is its growing network of regional hubs with yesterday’s announcement of the Alliance Fort Worth Airport (AFW) as its newest location.

This is the third in the series of staggered announcements from the e-commerce giant that have taken place over the past few weeks, following the additional frequencies at Chicago Rockford (RFD), and plans to resume operations at Wilmington (ILN).

The company said its AFW presence will serve to address the carrier’s “larger scale regional needs,” including sortation operations and multiple flights per day. The airport is located about 14 miles north of Fort Worth’s central business district.

“We are excited to build a brand-new facility from the ground up at the Fort Worth Alliance Airport,” Sarah Rhoads, Director of Amazon Air said, calling it the “first airport project of its kind” for Amazon Air.

Construction of the facility is already underway. Once finished, the company expects the hub to create hundreds of jobs at the airport.

The two-year-old carrier of the Seattle-based e-commerce giant currently has a fleet of forty 767s, which our sister publication Cargo Facts has speculated will continue to grow. Following this splay of hub expansion announcements – this most recent of which is unlikely to be the last – a fleet expansion does seem likely.
