ACP Worldwide has been chosen as the cargo GSA across South Africa for Air China and will sell capacity on the airline’s first ever nonstop, direct flight between China and Africa. The first inbound flight was on Oct. 29, with the first outbound on Oct. 30.
Services using a 777-300ER will operate from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport three times a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – to Beijing. China is currently South Africa’s largest trade partner, so there has been considerable interest in developing direct cargo services between the two nations.
Airfreight business in South Africa will principally be generated from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and ACP has already established a road feeder service network to bring in more cargo from Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London. A wide range of commodities are expected to be carried to China, and there have already been expressions of interest from forwarders wishing to arrange shipments of flowers, oysters, engine blocks, catalytic converters and other high-value cargo.
