People: Ortberg leads Boeing as president, CEO

The Boeing Board of Directors elected Robert K. “Kelly” Ortberg as the company’s president and chief executive, effective Aug. 8. Ortberg also joined the board. [caption id="attachment_57144654" align="alignright" width="233"] Robert K. "Kelly" Ortberg[/caption] Ortberg succeeded Dave Calhoun , who announced his retirement in March. Calhoun had been president and CEO since January 2020 and a member of the Board of Directors since 2009. His retirement announcement coincided with the announcements that Chairperson Larry Kellner would not seek reelection and commercial airplanes division chief Stan Deal was leaving the company. These departures came after a door partially blew off midflight on a Boeing 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines , forcing an emergency landing. The FAA grounded 171 Max 9 aircraft after the incident and audited Boeing’s production line. Boeing submitted a corrective action plan to the FAA, which continues to closely monitor the manufacturer. Ortberg brings more than 35 years of aerospace leadership to Boeing. In 2013, he became president and CEO of Rockwell Collins , which he joined in 1987, and in 2018 he led the company as it integrated with RTX . He began his career in 1983 as an engineer at Texas Instruments . He is also a former chair of the Aerospace Industries Association Board of Governors. Magma Aviation names Kerins as CEO [caption id="attachment_57144659" align="alignright" width="222"] Peter Kerins[/caption] Cargo airline Magma Aviation , a subsidiary of Chapman Freeborn , appointed Peter Kerins as CEO. Kerins succeeds Conor Brannigan , who stepped down July 31 after three years leading the carrier. Kerins has more than 30 years of aviation and logistics experience. He previously worked at Virgin Atlantic , DHL , Heavyweight Air Express and Etihad Airways . He began his career in freight forwarding sales in 1991, according to an Aug. 6 release. Madavi hired as chief innovation officer at Kale Logistics [caption id="attachment_57144663" align="alignright" width="241"] Sanjeev Madavi[/caption] Technology products provider Kale Logistics Solutions appointed Sanjeev Madavi as chief innovation officer. Madavi will lead Kale’s expansion into multimodal community platforms and help develop new services to complement the company’s cargo community systems (CCS) platforms, according to an Aug. 13 release. He will focus on introducing services to further streamline and synchronize CCS platforms, making them more adaptable and unified sources of data. With nearly 30 years of experience in digital transformation in supply chain and logistics, Madavi has held leadership positions at Khimji Ramdas , Asyad Group , Bahwan CyberTek and i2 Technologies , according to the release. Koh heads China at FedEx [caption id="attachment_57144661" align="alignright" width="222"] Poh-Yian Koh[/caption] FedEx promoted Poh-Yian Koh to president of FedEx China and senior vice president at FedEx, effective Aug. 1. Koh succeeds Eddy Chan , who retired Aug. 16, according to a July release from FedEx. Koh will lead initiatives to optimize its network and capacity in China and accelerate digitalization, the release stated. Koh moved to China in 1994 and has held director roles for FedEx in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing. In her most recent role as vice president of China operations, she strengthened ground and gateway operations while supporting sustainability, according to the release. Lufthansa Cargo creates head of global markets position [caption id="attachment_57144645" align="alignright" width="169"] Anand Kulkarni[/caption] Lufthansa Cargo appointed Anand Kulkarni to the newly created position of head of global markets, effective July 15. Kulkarni leads and manages the sales regions and digital sales department of Lufthansa Cargo, according to a July 10 release. Kulkarni has 25 years of experience in the logistics industry. Before joining Lufthansa Cargo , he was head of global expansion at GLS Group and he spent 15 years with DHL, where his responsibilities included leading regional pricing and profitability and global sales steering and performance management. Swissport appoints cargo leaders for North America [caption id="attachment_57144660" align="alignright" width="206"] Peter Weir[/caption] [caption id="attachment_57144643" align="alignright" width="179"] Ajay Barolia[/caption] Swissport International named Ajay Barolia as senior vice president for cargo in North America and Peter Weir as senior vice president of cargo commercial for North America, both effective July 15. Barolia comes from Qatar Airways , where he spent nearly a decade in senior roles, most recently as vice president of global cargo operations, according to a July 15 release from Swissport. Weir joined Swissport from Menzies Aviation , where he served for more than 20 years in leadership roles overseeing cargo operations, ground handling, sales and business development. In the United States and Canada, Swissport serves more than 150 airline customers and freight forwarders, and operates 19 air cargo centers, according to the release.
