Digital Pulse: MSC Air Cargo integrates Descartes Air Messaging

MSC Air Cargo , the carrier launched in 2022 by container shipper MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. , has integrated the Air Messaging solution from Descartes Systems Group to better manage airfreight shipments. The solution helps standardize electronic communication between stakeholders in the air cargo supply chain, including freight forwarders, ground handling agents and government agencies, according to a release from Descartes. [caption id="attachment_57133207" align="alignright" width="300"] (Courtesy/MSC Air Cargo)[/caption] “The Descartes solution helps us ... by simplifying and streamlining how shipment information is received and transmitted between multiple parties with different systems, so that the airfreight we move reaches its final destination reliably and efficiently,” MSC Air Cargo Vice President Anders Matikka said in the release. “MSC already uses Descartes’ ocean messaging, security filing and global trade intelligence solutions in our container shipping operations and wanted to build on this success in air cargo.” From electronic data interchange to API and direct system-to-system connectivity, Air Message supports a wide range of data standards, message specifications and message delivery options, according to the release. “Freight forwarders, airlines, government agencies all need to be able to share data — share it accurately in a timely manner,” Scott Sangster , general manager of global logistics services providers at Descartes, told Air Cargo Next at the World Cargo Symposium in Hong Kong this week. “Our Air Messaging service rides what we call our global logistics network. It’s the largest multimodal network for shipping. “The key to it is for freight forwarders to near-lightspeed electronically communicate on bookings, host bills, master air waybills and status events in particular, and exchange that information between forwarders, airlines, ground handlers,” he said. “Then, what we do is sort of repurpose or multipurpose that data to also do cargo security filings.” Emirates SkyCargo joins cargo.one Emirates SkyCargo added its capacity to cargo.one ’s digital air cargo booking platform this week. The partnership will roll out in select countries in Europe before expanding across the Americas, Africa, the Far East and Australasia. “Digitalization is a key way that we help the world work better, providing flexible and convenient options for freight forwarders,” Jeffrey van Haeften , senior vice president cargo commercial worldwide at Emirates SkyCargo, said in the release. Cargo.one’s platform offers digital booking for more than 50 carriers, including: Qatar Airways Cargo ; Air France KLM Martinair Cargo ; Turkish Cargo ; ANA Cargo ; Etihad Cargo ; LATAM Cargo ; Lufthansa Cargo ; Avianca Cargo ; Air Canada Cargo ; and Saudia Cargo . “The addition of Emirates SkyCargo’s global connectivity to cargo.one will equip thousands of forwarders with enhanced resilience from even more daily services on many key trade lanes, as well as a number of exciting new destinations throughout Africa and the Middle East,” cargo.one founder and co-Chief Executive Moritz Claussen said in the release. Cathay Cargo Terminal enables e-payments Cathay Cargo Terminal became the first air cargo terminal at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) to introduce a business-to-business e-payment solution, partnering with cargo payment platform PayCargo to offer a secure digital payment method for import cargo collection.
